The sport of fencing.

Fencing is one of only five sports that has been included in every modern Olympic games since 1896. It is based on the traditional skills of swordsmanship and self defense but has developed into a sport of tactical skill and bouting strategy. A game of ‘physical chess’, fencing combines mental tactics with physical performance and athleticism. Fencers use agility, balance, hand-eye coordination, speed, wit, and reflexes to try to tag their opponents. Fencing emphasizes creativity, discipline, hard work, and problem solving. Fencing is challenging but also exciting, fun, and rewarding. It builds focus, encourages patience and rewards courage.

Fencing offers youth competition through the United States Fencing Association. High school fencing and national tournaments provide distinction and opportunities for admission to top universities and/or scholarship opportunities.

Weapons

Epee!

Epee is a point weapon with no right of way. The entire body is target area and fencers are allowed to flesh at critical moments. Epee is the heaviest weapon and the bouts require the most patience.

Foil!

The lightest and most flexible of all weapons. Foil is a right of way weapon and points are scored by the tip of the blade landing on the torso. An off target hit will result in a halt followed by a restart of the match.

Saber!

Saber is the fastest of all three weapons. It is a right of way weapon that combines patience with speed and agility. All sides of the blade can be used to score a touch. Strategic aspects of planning, quick thinking, and change during bouting situations are emphasized.
